It is not very often a film comes along that can truly move you right now to your core, but the new film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story does just that. Lizzie Velasquez is someone whose face you may recognize from TV or YouTube, but you may not know her story. This movie popped on my radar for the same reason. I had seen her before on TV and when I saw the poster and the time slot the film was showing at, I thought, perfect, I have an opening let's check it out. The crowd wasn't insane like some of the other bigger named films and since this was a documentary about Lizzie there wasn't a ton of huge celebrities who were going to be knocking down the red carpet with fans. The Paramount theater was packed and then something I have never seen happen before took place. When the gentleman from SXSW came out to introduce the film to the crowd, he was actually getting choked up even talking about it. This was when I realized this may be more than just a film to fill an empty time slot I had during the day.
I have to admit I was getting teary within the first 2 minutes. How crazy is that to imagine that a film can grab you and pull you in that fast? Two minutes and I knew there was definitely something special here. The film chronicles the life of the amazing and inspiring story of Lizzie Velasquez from the time she was born to her life now as a 25-year-old woman. We learn about the many hardships she and her family faced due to her condition and how she has never let that stop her from being the strong person she is today. She tells her story about the struggle growing through school was for not only her but for her family, particularly for her father, who is an elementary school teacher at the school Lizzie attended. Thet story really gets to its core message when, as a teenager, Lizzie finds a video on the internet of herself labeled as "The World's Ugliest Woman." It is from that video that Lizzie really transforms herself into what I would call a modern-day crusader. She begins to set herself up as one of the leading voices in the anti-bullying movement and it is brilliant to watch. This is the type of story and film that should be shown in every school across the country because the message from it is that important.
While watching this film you will laugh, you will cry and you will feel definitely feel something hopeful inside yourself. I left the theater wanting to go out and make the world a better place because what this movie shows is that we all have that ability within us to do so. I easily give this movie an A+. This movie is not only one that demands to be seen, but it demands to be felt. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
