Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are back again on the big screen together in the new comedy Daddy's Home. In this film, Ferrel plays Brad, a very mild-mannered guy who is blissfully happy with his life being married to Sarah (Linda Cardellini) and being the stepfather to her two children Megan and Dylan. He is the guy who is going out of his way to prove himself to these children and to be accepted by them. Things are going perfectly until one day when the children's real father shows back up on the scene. Dusty, played by Mark Wahlberg, is everything Brad isn't. He is cool, rugged, and a real man's man. Trying to find common ground, Brad invites Dusty to stay with them for a week while he is in town, totally oblivious to the fact that the real reason Dusty is here is to steal his family back.

These two, of course, work really well on screen together. As we have seen in their other film The Other Guys we know they can be funny when working side by side. Sadly though I feel like even their great chemistry couldn't really help this movie's weak story.  The idea is basic and straightforward, but watching its execution is frustrating and way over the top. In the movie, Sarah is pretty adamant about not wanting anything to do with her ex-husband, but she is taken as this background character with no say in this at all. She might as well be screaming in the back "DON'T DO IT! IT'S A TRAP!" but no one seems to be listening or even care about what she thinks about this situation. And then there is Brad. I know he is supposed to be the simple friendly nice guy, but even nice guys have their limits and it takes way to long for Brad to reach his in this film. Maybe I am being to hard on this film, but this just didn't do much for me as a comedy. Especially knowing how good these two can be when they are together.

I scored Daddy's Home with a C+. This is a funny film, but it could have done so much better. I really wanted to like this because I know these guys can really shine on-screen together, but this time, they missed the mark. While the film has some laughable moments, it's over the top stupidity is what cripples it. With a plethora of solid holiday films, you might want to consider making Daddy's Home one of the films that can wait to be seen until it hits Netflix.

Daddy's Home hits theater December 25th.
